Meet Dr. Andres Barkil-Oteo, our esteemed psychiatrist at Washington Interventional Psychiatry. As an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Barkil-Oteo brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our clinic. He completed his psychiatry residency at Yale University School of Medicine, pursued further training in public mental health at Columbia University, and honed his skills in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the prestigious Anna Freud Center in London, UK.

Dr. Barkil-Oteo’s approach to treatment is holistic, grounded in a deep understanding of the brain, mind, and body. He a specific expertise in working with individuals impacted by psychological trauma, where he integrates diverse explanatory models tailored to different backgrounds. Notably, he regularly collaborates with international organizations such as the IMF, World Bank, and UNICEF, advising on staff well-being and mental health policies.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Barkil-Oteo is also a researcher dedicated to advancing mental health. His research areas include refugee mental health, medical education, and leveraging technology for mental health care. With over 27 journal articles, authored chapters, and a book on telemental health, his academic contributions are testament to his expertise and commitment.

Dr. Barkil-Oteo’s impact extends globally through his work with NGOs in conflict zones, providing vital mental health services. He has coordinated mental health responses for refugee crises with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), conducted evaluations and training missions with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and served as a staff well-being consultant for UNICEF.
